Dear friends & colleagues -
This Fourth of July marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. Given the rise in white Christian nationalism and our polarized political atmosphere, I know I am wondering how to approach this holiday as a faithful follower of Christ and ethical citizen - I also imagine I am not alone in struggling how to both meaningfully and effectively share these struggles with my congregation. Thankfully, a number of people and groups have been putting together resources in anticipation of this year's Fourth of July.
KO pastor Rev. Dr. Lori Walke with Mayflower Congregational UCC (OKC) provided a pastoral letter for the Fourth of July Pastoral Care Package put together by Illustrated Ministry. To access these free resources, please visit https://get.illustratedministry.com/fourthofjuly to register.
KO pastor Rev. Dr. Mandy Todd has crafted both a one-time and eight-week study of Amanda Tyler's 2024 book How to End Christian Nationalism, which could provide either/both support for preaching around the Fourth as well as continuing conversations within your church. Another resource includes this great conversation with Bishop Donna Simon about Christian nationalism from January brought to KO by way of our mission partner, Kansas Interfaith Action. In addition to her work with KIFA, Rev. Dr. Todd serves an ELCA congregation and also provided this link to ELCA resources.
Rev. Franz Rigert, the Conference Minister for the Wisconsin Conference of the UCC, shared information about Faith In Us - a multifaith clergy movement concerned about protecting democracy, its strategic plan, and the Faith In Us sign-on letter.
