Some words from Lorraine on the Recent Supreme Court Decision

Friends, this week the Court overturned my constitutional right to live and travel freely in Southern California without fear of being detained through racial profiling. My family, my friends, and anyone who looks like me are now vulnerable to being seized at any time, for almost any reason or no reason at all.

I’m not sharing this for sympathy or prayers, so please don’t respond in that way. I share it so we all understand the reality: my freedoms are being stripped away, our freedoms are being stripped away. Today it’s Los Angeles County. Tomorrow, it will be somewhere else. This is only the beginning.

When citizens are wrongly detained under suspicion of being undocumented, the injustice doesn’t end with their release. They are billed for the meals served to them while held, often $500 or more, for a mistake that was never theirs.

This is what it looks like when justice gives way to cruelty, and when the cost of freedom is extracted from those who can least afford it. Let us hold this truth together as we discern what faithful leadership requires of us now.

Thanks,
Lorraine
